How to Extract Clean Transparent PNG Signatures for PDF Contracts & Invoices

In today's paperless workflow, digital document signing is standard across legal, financial, and corporate operations. However, inserting a photograph of a handwritten signature often leaves an unsightly gray or yellow paper rectangle over contract lines. Creating a clean, transparent PNG signature solves this problem permanently.

The Challenge with Scanned Paper Signatures

When photographing or scanning a signature on physical paper, the white paper is rarely pure white. Room lighting, shadows, paper grain, and scanner sensor noise produce uneven off-white backgrounds (RGB values ranging from 210 to 240). If pasted onto a PDF, Word document, or Google Doc, the rectangular boundary becomes immediately visible.

Step-by-Step: Converting Paper to a Lossless Transparent PNG

  1. Sign on Clean Paper: Use a dark black or deep blue gel pen or felt-tip marker on a blank white sheet. Avoid lined or textured notebook paper.
  2. Take a Well-Lit Photo: Hold your smartphone directly parallel to the paper in daylight or bright indoor lighting to prevent casting your phone's shadow over the ink.
  3. Upload to Removely: Drag the signature image into the Removely background remover. The AI model detects the ink strokes and cleanly cuts away the paper texture.
  4. Refine the Alpha Mask: In the editor settings, increase the Confidence Threshold slightly (around 160-190) to eliminate faint paper grain while keeping the pen strokes solid and crisp.
  5. Download & Embed: Download the transparent PNG. You can now insert this asset into Adobe Acrobat, Preview, DocuSign, Microsoft Word, or PDF editors with zero background distortion.
